Fain would I move to the music of holy souls! — from The Hymn of Jesus
Gustav Holst was so fascinated by a hymn in the apocryphal Acts of John that he learned Greek in order to make his own translation for his musical setting. Francis Poulenc, shaken by the death of a friend, renewed the Catholic faith of his childhood during a pilgrim to the Shrine of the Black Virgin in Rocamadour, France. And Florent Schmitt melded the musical languages of France and Germany to give exultant voice to Psalm 47. In some of the most glorious music ever written, each composer invoked the mystic spirit, the pursuit of spiritual union with the divine.
